Types of Coal
Coal is ranked based on the amount of heat and pressure that has acted upon it over the years. Mainly, coal is classified into four types: Anthracite, Bituminous, Subbituminous, and Lignite.
Anthracite – This type of coal has the highest amount of carbon content (around 87% to 97%) and is the most mature form of coal deposit. This type of coal is majorly used in the metal industry.
Bituminous – This type of coal has around 45% to 85% of the carbon content. It is estimated that this category of coal is between 100 million to 300 million years old. Bituminous coal is used for cooking and generating electricity. Moreover, it is an important raw material used in the iron and steel industry.
Subbituminous – This type of coal has around 35% to 45% of the carbon content. It is estimated that this category of coal is at least 100 million years old. This coal has lower heating value as compared to bituminous and anthracite coal.
Lignite – This type of coal has around 25% to 35% of the carbon content. Lignite coal is generally used to generate electricity. It is crumbly in nature and has moisture content.
