Gurmeet Choudhary: These days the second season of the web series Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhen is streaming on Netflix. This season, actor Gurmeet Choudhary has entered the show. He is happy that his debut in web series format has started with such a big platform and popular show. Urmila Kori's conversation on her association and preparations for this series
You have a new entry in this series, were you nervous?
I have been a fan of this series since the lockdown but I never thought that I would be a part of Season 2. It was challenging because I was new to the show and everyone else was experienced. It is challenging but I have given my best and worked hard. I met Siddharth sir for the first time and I said that I want to do this. What could be better than making my OTT debut with a Netflix show? I have played my best character till date. My styling is also different.
We have always seen your dedication towards your work, what did you learn and forget while doing the series?
All the actors in this series are good. I would feel that I should not act and should remain natural. Till now I have done a lot of action and drama but this world was new to me and I felt that I should not act but be as natural as I am. Director sir taught me a lot, he worked hard on everything from my look to my gait. When I came to the set I was nervous. He shot important scenes in the beginning itself. He shot the most difficult scene, a 12-page scene, on the first day. Thank God I did it.
Did you have to do retakes for any scenes?
(Laughs) Director Siddharth Sengupta was unhappy with my first scene where I ask where Purva is. He was not happy with my expression. He wanted me to do it again. I was happy that he was pushing me to do better. He pushed me a lot and I enjoyed it a lot. You need directors like him who try to get the best out of the actors. I have worked on my dialogue delivery for this show.
Are you satisfied with your career?
My father was in the army. When I was 10 years old, I saw children dreaming of becoming doctors or engineers. I wanted to act and at the age of 16, I came to Mumbai and played small roles on the sets to learn acting. At the age of 24, Ramayan was my first break. I want to improve myself every day. I can't sit idle, I have to keep working on myself every day.
You were very young when you did Ramayan, how would you describe your off-screen experience?
Yes, I was only 24 years old at that time. I needed maturity to play the role of Lord Ram and both Debina and I were very young. That show had a deep impact on my personal life too. Debina had done South films and I was tempted to give her this role. Had to give in and told her that people in the North don't know her, she should do this show. I wanted to be able to spend time with Debina. Well, this role came with a lot of responsibility and I never smoked or drank because I felt a huge responsibility. Even today, when I see my friends posting pictures of me with a cigarette or a glass of wine, I tell them to remove it because it will affect my fans. When I was young, I always saw stars with a glass of wine or a cigarette in their hands and felt that they looked cool. After doing Ramayana, my perspective had changed. Now if someone else is smoking or drinking and I am also present there, then I do not allow those pictures to be posted.
After that you never did any mythological role?
(Laughs) You can't see your boyfriend wearing the same clothes every day. It gets boring. I make sure that I do different types of roles, otherwise the audience will get bored of seeing me in the same roles.
Was it difficult to last that long?
There is no substitute for hard work. If you want to achieve something, you will have to go through this.
